Radio Show Notes for November 30 2009

Metallica Part 1

It’s time to fill you in on the stuff we covered today on our radio show.

Today we started off the show with “The Hockey Song” by D.O.A. Explore.

The Grey Cup is over. We’re deep into hockey season, so what better time than to play this new cover from D.O.A., the legendary Vancouver punk band. You know the words. It doesn’t get any more Canadian than this.

It’s “The Hockey Song” originally by the legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors. The album is called “Kings of Punk, Hockey and Beer”.

Love it, cherish it, go forth and spread the word.

Let’s go to the news.

5) The Who Confirms Superbowl Appearance

Now that we know that the Riders have trouble counting to 12, it’s all about the Superbowl now. And after being coy about being the halftime entertainment, The Who finally admited that yes, they’re doing it in Miami on February 7

Alan has a blog today on Superbowl halftime entertainers.

4) Susan Boyle Unseats Arctic Monkeys

As expected, The Arctic Monkeys no longer hold the UK record for the most debut CDs sold in the first week. It’s now Susan Boyle, the frumpy, unstable woman from the X-Factor. 130,000 copies on the first day, 410,000 by the end of the week. That’ll tell you who’s buying CDs these days.

That’s almost 50,000 more than The Arctic Monkeys record for “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” in January 2006.

And because Simon Cowell gets a piece of this stuff, he’s a whole lot richer. And so are The Rolling Stones because Boyle covered their song “Wild Horses”—and, just in case, the Stones re-released their version, too.

3) Music Celebs Turn Out In Force For Chi

There was another benefit concert for Chi Cheng, the bass player for the Deftones who is still recovering from a car crash last November.

He’s got a lot of friends. You should see who showed up for this thing. Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, guys from Incubus, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, Robert Trujillo from Metallica, Dave Lombardo from Slayer, three-quarters of System of A Down, dudes from Suicidal Tendencies.

If you’re a Deftones fan, please go check out this link. There’s an auction going on to help raise money for Chi’s care and his family who have been knocked down financially by this whole thing.

You should see what they’re offering. A day in the studio with Blink 182. One of System’s actual drum kits. Tons of signed guitars. Wow.

Here’s Alan’s blog about the situation.

2) World’s Most Famous Turntable To Be Discontinued?

This next story could mean a fundamental shift in the make-up of the universe. The greatest DJ turntable ever made is the Technics SL-1200 series. There is no better. This is the Ford F-150, the Boeing 747, the Sherman tank of the DJ booth. However, stories circulating out of Australia say that Technics is about to discontinue production.

This would be like Porsche saying they’re going to stop making the 911. If you’re a DJ, you know exactly what we mean.

Why? No one is sure, especially since the SL-1200 continues to sell and vinyl is stronger than it’s been in years. Here’s links to a couple of stories, and here’s Alan’s blog with some more info.

1) Coldplay and A-ha Members Form New Group

Another week, another supergroup. This one is called “Apparatjik”. Guy Berryman, the bass player from Coldplay plus Magne Furuholem from A-ha are at the core. Then it’s Martin Terefe, who’s A-ha’s producer and Jonas Bjerre from an excellent Danish band called “Mew”.

They offered up a free download early this morning. The song is called “Electric Eye”. And it sounds like this.

They have a really cool website. Very stylish.

5 SONGS YOU GOTTA HEAR TODAY:

If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed by the infinite supply of music, you’ve come to the right place. Here are five tracks that can maybe set you in the right direction.

Raw” by The Popes

We are going to start with some Irishmen in London. The Popes were formed by singer Shane McGowan when the was kicked out of The Pogues for being too much of a drunk. He’s not in The Popes anymore, either—at least not officially. And The Popes have had their troubles, too. There was time in prison. One of the members died. But they are still carrying on.

A guy named Paul McGuinness is the singer—not the same Paul McGuinness who manages U2—and he sounds so brilliantly world-weary that—well, just have a listen.

The album is called “Outlaw Heaven”. The song you want is “Raw”. It’s way more Tom Waits than Celtic Rock.

This Is A Test” by Attack! Attack!

Attack! Attack! Is from southern Wales. They obviously look to The Foo Fighters for inspiration. They probably like Seether, Bush, and Nirvana, too. In fact, they share space with Nirvana on “Guitar Hero 5”. They contribute a song called “This Is A Test”. Grungey Welsh music.

Congratulations” by MGMT

MGMT is currently working on a second album in Malibu. They’ve been trying out some of this new material live. A track called “Congratulations” has been posted. This is apparently the title track of their new record.

Time” by O’Spada

O’Spada is a band left over from Friday’s list of Swedish bands. Alan honestly doesn’t know what to make of these people. He has a hard time making it through a song called “Time”—but maybe you’ll have better luck. You will if you like Michael Jackson.

The Unforgettable Fire” by U2

And finally, back to Ireland for U2. They’ve reissued their fourth album, “The Unforgettable Fire,” in a bunch of different deluxe forms. This was their game-changing album from 1984—and the first to feature the production team of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Still a great, great record. Check out the video for the title track.

ExploreMusic TRIVIA:

It’s U2 question. The band was all uptight in the early part of the recording sessions for “The Unforgettable Fire”. How did Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois get them to loosen up?

They made everyone rehearse and record naked. Something about breaking down inhibitions. Whatever the reasons, it worked.

ExploreMusic Feature Item: Metallica

Last December, Alan promised an interview with Metallica. It took almost a year, but he got it. He had a chance to sit down with Kirk Hammett before a show in Toronto. He was not well. He thought he had H1N1—so it was good we sat in a windowless, airless room for half an hour. Kirk seemed a little down, so they talked about puppies.

Check out the original video for “Enter Sandman”.

ExploreMusic Playlist: The songs featured on the radio show today were:

“The Hockey Song” by D.O.A.
“Overtime” by D.O.A.
"Electric Eye" by Apparatjik
“Raw” by The Popes
“Enter Sandman” by Metallica

That’s it for today. I’m outta here. See you tomorrow.
